My sister-in-law recently died from ALS. Doctors can only speculate as to the root cause of the disease. Some have considered it hereditary and others have linked it to repeated jarring of the body, a condition that might explain the prominence of the disease in athletes. The rarity of the affliction, along with the difficulty in diagnosing has left the medical community baffled.

As far as I know the only real risk factor they are aware of is genetic inheritance. It doesn't mean you'll get it but the risk is higher and the onset is younger than those who don't inherit it.
