if you cant pay for it yourself you should not have one.
actually now that i think this one over again, if you can convince them that you need it for reasons other than "everyone else has one," such as emergency contact or so they know where you are, then I don't see why not AS LONG AS:
1) The phone you buy is paid for by birthday/christmas money or saved up allowance
2) It is pay as you go
3)The minutes you buy are paid for by your allowance.

I think your mom is smart. I am 19, and my mom told me if I wanted a cell phone to pay for it myself. I never could afford it, so I never got one. This year I was able to borrow my bf's parents cell for a few weeks... and I probably used it 3 times. Once at the grocery store to see what my bf wanted for dinner, once at work to say I was staying late, and once from school to say that I needed a ride home (my car was in the shop). All of the above could have been done from phones in the building, and the phone wasn't necessary.
In the end, you do NOT need a cell phone, you ARE too young, and you just need to get over it. Sorry hun!

I don't know whehter you are to young for a cell phone becaue i don't know you personaly but i got a mobile phone when I was twelve because of the issue of safety, going to school and coming back on my own i think that you have to prove to your parents that you are responsible. So don't say to them 'all my friends have one' because to them it will just sound childish (even though it's true that they have one only say it in your mind). What you need to do is talk to them and ask for one just for safety and that you will only use it in emergencies. Then maybe if they give you one gradually get them to let you use it for communicating. Ask them to give you a trial period or you can even ask for someone elses old phone and if they see you using that one responsible then mayvbe they will trust you. To be honest it is really about reasuring your parents because a phone is a major investment and to give it to you would be handing over money that maybe they don't have. Maybe the reason they are saying no is because they don't have the finaces. So some other things are
1) Instead of a monthly bill get pay as you go. That way you are in more contral and will convince your parents. My parents would give me ten pound a month. For emergencies and if I need more pay for it myself.
2) Maybe ask if you can borrow someone elses old phone for a period of time as proof that you can handle it. Such as, not losing it, breaking it or getting it stolen. this is another threat because phones are targeted and sometimes a mobile could be more trouble then it is worth.
3) Having a proper conversation with them and asking whether they can afford it and maybe showing them phones and coming up with a plan as to how you can keep the expense down could help.
4) Go for it what have you got to lose. You might have to settle for next year. But by then they will have way more up to date phones so maybe it will be even better if you did wait.

I feel that the way things are today with so many children being abducted and abused, you are not to young for a cell phone, even if its a pre paid phone, I have a 7 year old and I bought her a firefly mobile phone. Its a phone designed especially for kids.I programmed all the important numbers and I can control who calls her. I feel so much at ease when she goes to play outside with some of the neighborhood kids, I can call her and check up on her make sure she is ok or she can call me just by pushing a button, even if she is just a few houses down the street. it gives me a little peace of mind. Its not expensive, maybe you can talk to your parents into getting you one. Good Luck

The ONLY reason my son has a cell phone is because it was cheaper to add him to our plan then having a home phone. Otherwise he wouldn't have a cell phone. He comes home after school and calls me to let me know he got home safe. He doesn't abuse it, text message, buy games, etc. If you have a home phone then there is no need for you to have a cell phone. I feel that way about all kids that aren't old enough to afford it themselves. These phones don't pay for themselves.
Your mom knows whats best for you. Trust her, she loves you.

I got my own cell phone on my birthday when I turned 17. Wait till you are older, cell phones are just another responsibility that if not controlled can get you in trouble.
PS: Not saying to wait till your 17 but 12 is to young in my opinion.

NEVER rate yourself by what others have! It is not a good thing. Rate yourself by who you are! A Good Kid? Get Good Grades? Never approach your parents with So-n-So has one why can't I? This will get you no where fast. Instead sit down and make a list of the pros and cons of having a cell phone! Reasoning does a lot then comparing!
And you might bring in the ability to have a trac phone (which is pre-paid)

You're can't, because you ARE too young. What could you possibly NEED a cell phone for? You're old enough when you start driving and can pay for it yourself. That's when my daughters got theirs.
Kudos to your mom for being a MOM who sets boundaries and sticks to them. You will be a more mature, responsible adult for that, while your friends grow up to be self-indulgent people who think the world should cater to their every whim!

I'm almost 12 and I need one too. what use a lot is "What if someone is chasing me and trying to kill me? There are no phones around and I could call for help if I had a cell phone. But no. I'm about to get killed because of a phone....." If your parents say that would never happen, there is a possibility. It could.

Please let your mom know that it would (and you would honestly have to agree to this) ONLY be for emergencies. Not to talk with your friends, even for a minute. The only other reason would be to call and ask her for an okay from her to go to a friend's house after school. It would basically be to keep in touch with your mom, let her know where you are at all times, and with whom. It's a safety thing. Take care.
