Its a toss up for me. I found them both a little disappointing. But 'Take the Lead' had better dance scenes. Besides the lead girl in Step up is in Take the Lead as well so it shows she really put some dedication into dancing.

I prefer TAKE THE LEAD as to step up. I like taking things.To Step up would be questioning the opponent as to weather I am worthy to them. I never watched either of the movies but the 2 Titles are a question in themselves.
