First, forget about the 40 yard dash. No one really cares about that until college. As long as your in game, in pads speed is quick enough. At your age you need to stay away from lifting. It will actually keep you from growing to your full potential. I believe the recent talk is to wait until you hit your growth spurt around 15 or 16.

As for your position, don't limit yourself to one position. The more positions you learn to play, the better you will be at the one you end up with. For example, if you learn to play running back then when you are playing linebacker you will see the holes that are opening for the running back quicker. Also you can learn to read the running back's eyes and know what he is thinking. Why would he only look to the left before the snap? More than likely because that is where he is running with the ball. But you would understand that better if you learned to play that position.

If you want to get faster there are two things you need to think about. One is overall speed, while the other is quick movements. You can make up for a lack of speed if you react and change direction fast. I used to work on this by running side to side around the goalposts in a figure 8. Just keep facing forward and step left over right then right over left and make sharp cuts at the posts. You can also sprint 10 yards forward and 5 yards backward from the goalline until you reach the 50, then turn and run as fast as you can back to the goalline. When you are running use short quick steps until the final sprint back. As for overall speed, I like what the earlier post said about a jumprope. Make sure it is heavier than the toy jumpropes. Also, if there are hills around where you live run up them. You need to work on 5 second bursts. That's all the time you have to run in one down of football. Look up excersises for younger teens that deal with quick twitch muscles. And remember to stay away from the weights for another couple of years. You can end up with very bad, permanent injuries.

Lastly, don't forget the most important rule. Have fun and enjoy it.

After reading some of the responses before mine, I tend to agree with some of the others. With your current skills I would lean towards linebacker or maybe defensive end. Your lack of speed may be a factor in your ability to play safety.

Keep in mind, though, that you're only 12 years old. Your body is going to change tremendously in the next few years. Way back when I was your age I was about your size. By the time I graduated from high school I was 6'5" and weighed around 200 lbs. I played tight end on offense and linebacker and defensive end on defense.

As far as a workout goes, I wouldn't mess with any weights quite yet. Weight training too young can damage an underdeveloped body structure. I would wait at least another year. At that point I would recommend that you visit the weight room every day. Make sure that your workout is distributed evenly across your body, upper as much as lower. I also recommend that you run daily. Running laps and wind sprints help increase endurance as well as exercise and stretch your leg muscles. The leg weights that one of the others mentioned may be a good idea that you can actually use now. You may be surprised at the results!

wow!

I like how you are so ready to play...good for you.
This spirit will get you through until high school!

I'm a little worried as to how you already know that you "suck on D-line" but claim to be good at tackling.

Thats a HUGE desparity considering you identified two skills (throwing and blocking) and then NAMED an entire position D-Line). D-linemen have to know how to tackle - thats where the ball is run too.

Every idiot here says play linebacker: by the way...to play linebacker you have to have enough football sense that - you would already know what position you could play - AND...you could play D-line if asked to. You're still slim for your age - Linebacker is out for you for now.

Defensive End ( a linebackers ability but faster) would be ideal but - oops - thats D-line...you suck at that. Which is yet another reason why Linebacker is not the position for you.

So to answer your question of what position...
you play where the coach tells you to play.

Tips for your 40 time: run hills and steps until you are exhausted...every other nite.

well you are almost like me but the diffrences im older an i can almost too every job in football exept offensive line not because that im suck at it but i just dont like it,well my advice is there are 4 position you could possibly to good at 1. Rb 2. LB. 3 TE .4 Safety, but first you must get ridd of the attitude saying you suck always arise above your challenges no matter what the obstecale if u want more speed it is the right time for you to keep on running 50/100 m dash so when u get older youll be fast enough remember warm up is very imporatant so that you dont hurt your muscles ,if you want strength weight lifting is good but your too young wait untill your 16-18 than start lifting, after 18 you could push your body to the limit a process that im still in Im saying this because i play American Football too.i have almost the same attribute as you but im going for Linebacker so im lifting heavy im 18 years old,215lbs,6'3,my max lift is 300lbs with support of another person 5 times*2,my average weight that i can lift is 150 lb,i tackle to kill the RB not just to put him down, but im good at it, my coach tell me to be a safety cauz first im not too heavy enough an i also have great awareness an i can catch ball too there are much more bigger an older guy in team but remember if you truely want to know what position you want play find the position you like playing the most and then work for perfection of skill, technique, and never say you have enough of learning an work, will is very important an so as determination, work, work, work, learn, learn, learn.be very agressive but use it wisely in the feild learn to use the element of fire with suprise, timing, skill youll be invinceble in any positon.

If you can read plays well and intercept passes you should play safety. You don't need to have the fastest speed as a safety if you can read the plays very well. The main thing about playing safety is you can't be scared to break up a pass or throw your body around a lot. You have to work on quickness, making plays on the football when its in the air, pursuit angles, and also tackling.

i can tackle and read the QB good and am good at intercepting passes.

This sentence says it all. You would be best at the safety position. Speed is very important for this position. Try doing your sprints with a small parachute dragging behind you. This will increase air drag making your run harder and ultimately improving your time.

Knowledge of the game is also important. Study the offensive line. Have someone film your games so you can study the offense. Do this over the weekend after games and talk to your coach about what you see.

You do seem to decribe a linebacker. It would be hard to suggest an offensive position with average speed and bad at throwing or blocking. If you have to play offense as well as defence, you may have to develop some skills. Work with the coach. It will be hard, but that is what will make it worthwhile. Best.

For Defense you should go for either Safety or LB. For safety you should work on coverage, one way is to get a friend and have him run different routes to try and throw you off. For LB you should work on D-line, one way to work on D-line is to practice finding holes and exploiting them to get into the backfield.

For Offense you should go for either WR or RB. For WR you should work on using your agility to create separation instead of only using speed. I don't really know what to do for agility, but you could probably find some information from coaches and on the internet. For RB you should work on agility and sprinting. Again I am not really sure what you can do to help sprinting, but you can probably find some information from track coaches.

For increasing your 40-yard dash one thing you can do is to go out and do some conditioning. Another thing you can do is to attach some weights to your legs and do some running, I would recommend starting light so you do not hurt yourself.

No matter what you decide you should probably hit the weights and work on your muscles, but at your current age you should not work on building muscles, but on strengthening the muscles you already have.
