no you can use your regular on board hookup. you will want a video card though if you plan on using it for video games

in reality, you need a graphics card to be able to use monitor, period.

now, if the video card that you have is a little bit old, it may not have the appropriate setting to use the widescreen format you need, in which case you will need to change it... but the only thing to do for now, is to find out it it works or not. so you go to the properties and change them to something like 1440x900 and keep changing until you find one that is appropriate... if non of them work... yes you need to change it.
