a radio station in canada had a contest to have something similar to "as american as apple pie". the winner was "as canadian as possible under the circumstances", obviously relating to its relationship with a global superpower next door. can anybody help explain this to me?

There is a joke being made here and actually a rather good one. The idea is that Canadians think of themselves as being more modest than their brash neighbours to the south. So while there is the unqualified "As American as apple pie" there is the diffident "as Canadian as possible under the circumstances". Quite clever really.
