Burnt plastic smells strongly because the substituents of plastics are often compounds of benzene. Benzene belongs to a class of compounds known as aromatic compounds (guess why). That's right, because they smell funny.

No. If you burn enough metal and plastic in the microwave they will melt and fuse with the microwave itself, and combined with the radiation, together they shall form a supermicrowave: capable of extreme microwaving like you've never seen before. The smell is a mere trifle compared to the benefits of such a device.

Most all new microwave can have metal put in them, heck most of them now come with metal racks. Its aluminum that you don't want to put in a microwave.

It's because of the chemicals they use to form the material used to make plastic.
