I would have to say because he wants to be the first African-American president just as Hilary Clinton would like to be the first woman president.
When you are running for president, you have to listen to your campaign manager concerning what they think is best that will better your chances of winning the election. I don't believe that he is trying to mis-lead everyone just to get votes..

What the hell does an ethnic background have to do with running a country? I’m so tired o the brain dead media talking about issues like these and Anna Nicole Smith. Instead of talking about important issues like the war. And what ever happened to bird flu? What ever happened to the people that lost there home in Katrina and how’s the city doing? How bout the mysterious deaths of reporters in Russia? How about North Korea and Iran?

There is a long, involved history with identifying oneself as black. Historically, the "one drop" rule has unofficially applied. Also, most African-Americans do have some European blood.

i prefer American, because of the fact my people have been right here for hundereds of years only like white people... I resent african american because of the fact white africans that pass to usa are no longer called that so why am i...and not all people of darkish coloration are from africa. i kno hispanics that are darked coloration and arabs too... additionally if i moved to china and started a elevating a family participants might they be african chinese language? i think of no longer!

Because in this society, if you look black, then your black. Just like if you look hispanic, people are going to treat you hispanic. It doesn't matter that his parents are of different backgrounds, in society, he looks black so he is black.
He can call himself black because society sees him as black anyway.
