Yes, they most often come from undercooked meat (especially pork but ground beef and the like can do it too). Also drinking untreated water can infect you but that's rare in our Western society because of the availability of clean and safe water. Also kids sometimes pick up worms especially playing in sandboxes where pets go. You could get them from gardening if there are a lot of pets using your yard as their toilet but that's not as likely since adults usually tend to stick their sandy fingers in their mouth a lot less than little kids. ;-) Almost all worms must be ingested, either the worms or their eggs. Hookworm is an exception, it occurs in warm climates, and it can enter through the skin. It has been pretty much eradicated in the US & Europe since modern plumbing but it's still common in third world countries. Many other types of worms are more prevalent in other countries too. Always let your doctor know if you've travelled!

Yes, there's a particularly nasty worm called the **** worm (don't laugh, it really is called that) and you do NOT want to see pictures if you have a weak stomach...
Its scientific name is Ascaris Lumbriocoides, I believe.

yes - pinworms - especially if you are around kids that go to school. Doctor can easily eliminate them but you have to do everyone in the household.
