Unfortunately, a lack of knowledge in geography goes hand in hand with a lack of knowledge about other things, like earth science, history, culture, politics and many other subjects being involved.
Even languages. You can learn some of them here in the US, but learning those fluently requires a long-tern trip to the countries of their origin.
You say you do not plan traveling, but what about the future? Do you know already that you never will? Never say never.
I find it important for everyone to know this world to the extend that you can make yourself a picture about how it looks like and how it works.
If you don't, or I should better say if nobody does, how will the world community get to know one another better in order to avoid future conflicts?
The same counts for history, if you do not know how the past was, you'll neither have a slight idea why today's politics are the way they are now, nor how the future will look like.
And it is YOUR future as well.......and that of your children.
Plus, un(der)educated people about these subjects are the most vulnerable to be misled by the propaganda machines of political leaders that do not mean too well for their countries.

It's not bad if you cannot locate a lot of countries. It's a good thing, because it means there is a great deal for you to explore and learn about the Earth.

If you already knew everything, life would be pretty boring. Get a globe --- they're cheap, $20 new at Target --- spin it around. Put your finger on a spot. Chances are good that your ancestors came from there. (And they wouldn't want to go back, either.) Or people just like them live there, came from there, or stayed there, and probably you'll hit on a spot with people who are pretty much just like you.

You don't have to travel the world. But it's an important gift to yourself to learn how to appreciate the world around you.

well, there is nothing bad if you are weak at geography!so was i!
i, too like you thought about not learning or knowing things about it...
but, one day i was fooled by a travel agent..
i didnt know where bermuda was! nor did i know that you dont have to go to honk kong to take a transit flight from there to bermuda!
and, by the way, i live in new york, brooklyn!
i had to shell out thousands of dollar, just to reach the neighbouring country!
like, i dont blame you about being not interested in geography
but, i pretty well know that you dont wanna get fooled.
even if you dont plan going outta states, it is better if you know geography.
now, i make it a point to play a game everyday.
me and my son, find places on the map which my wife asks us to find out!
so, geography can be fun!
p.s. i met my wife in the bermudas and she is a geography high school teacher!

Geography is very important. Its not just knowing which countries are which but more of knowing location and how it affects you.

You may wish to know where in the world places are when you hear them mentioned on the news, or from people you meet.

It might be. Why? Well let's say you meet a cute guy- & he says he's from Djbouti. -Or Lesotho. -Or Ankara... What's he going to THINK of YOU- when you ask him, "What's THAT?"? He's gonna think, "Oh no, another dumb blond..." -and away he goes. .... ... OR; You're at a friend's party- and a cool group of girls asks you what your opinion is about the situation in Darfur... -Will you even know where that IS, let alone the situation? ...The bottom line IS, it's a small world... And if you don't know anything about it- you're going to be left out.

everybody of the human race should know the others of the same race with whom they share the (home) planet they live on
as well as their customs and needs

and vica versa

pretty dumb not to know your own back yard

pretty dumb not to know who else lives in the house

and pretty shallow to want to maintain a bugs view ,when we can easily have a global view with the present day educational tools on the internet.

the only hope this planet has is
if everybody gets to know each other
stop all wars and co-operate to get it together to behave correctly .
to maintain the place fit for human occupation.

You don't have to know about countries that are usually unheard of. But knowing more about other countries is something everyone should know. Even though you arent moving, u should know about other countries.
