The geography of the Mediterranean is pretty humid compared to Northern Europe - the people of Greece and Italy would have enjoyed nice weather, free of the freezing cold of Northern Europe. Would have enjoyed nice harbours.

But also take a look where Greece is situated - near italy, right on the Mediterranean bounded by the major powers of Europe, the Persian Empire to the east, the Romans in Italy, close access to Africa, as well as northern access to Europe.

The Mediterranean allows the Greeks great access to other cultures and influences, as well as trade and economic benefits. It also allows Greeks to expand their own influence and establish colonies throughout the Ancient world.

In ancient Greece people settled based on the terrain, who they were, and the dangers they faced.

The "Greeks" were late invaders into the penninsula of Greece. They were cattle herders, possibly nomadic. They did not like to eat fish and prefered to own land. So they settled on the plains of Greece.

Fish did provide a study supply of food, and more importantly access to the sea provided trade. Given the rocky coast of Greece there are a limited (although large) number of sites suitable as ports. So cities developed around those.

Given the raiding, piracy, and open warfare defense was necessary. Cities were built on hills or at least had fortresses on them.

So cities required a place where there were fields for farming, a port for access to the sea, and a hill for defense.

Greece is a very mountainous country. Mountains tend to naturally divide people into groups, especially in ancient times. Greece is also surrounded by water, so most people settled in coastal areas. Coastal areas provided them food, commerce, and gentler climates.
