not legally--you can't predate a emission certified engine only post date or put back in the same year. You can put a "96" into a "92"--But not a "92" into a "96".

If your car is a turbo model GST or GSX then go with the 1g motor. It's a 6-bolt rather than the 7-bolt which was in the 2g (95-99). It's a stronger motor and many people actually do a 6-bolt swap in their 2g eclipses. Some people have done it because the 7-bolt is more likely to crankwalk or it had crankwalk. The engine mounts do line up but there are some modifications. On magnus motorsports they have a great tech article on putting a 1G engine into a 2G car.

Note: If your car is non-turbo RS or GS then the older motor won't fit (without a lot of modifications and a lot of money). It's a 420a engine which was also found in the dodge neon around the same time the 2g eclipses were out.

all in all you can and it is possible and legal just the only thing is the engine wiring harness and computer you would need to be swap out from the 92 eclipse to your car and make sure the motor mounts are the same it will need major modification for the swap!

if you have any more questions about DSM Eclipse's or Mitsubishi evo's feel free to email me!

he's precise, gs and rs have the 420a, the gst has a 4g63, the two a 6 or 7 bolt, and the gsx have an awd version 4g63 the two 6 or 7 bolt. i might communicate over with some dsmers that comprehend their stuff before you do a swap, in the different case hit up some dsm particular shops, to make certain that the transmission which you have on your automobile will bolt as much as the engine your finding to get. hit up some mitsu boards for extra help. yahoo solutions isn't that great each and every so often.

4 Cylinder Engines
4 Cylinders 01997 R 2.0L MFI DOHC
4 Cylinders 01755 T 1.8L MFI SOHC
4 Cylinders 01997 U 2.0L MFI Turbo DOHC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

96 Eclispse Engines
4 Cylinder Engines
4 Cylinders 02351 G 2.4L MFI SOHC
4 Cylinders 01997 Y 2.0L MFI DOHC
4 Cylinders 01997 F 2.0L MFI Turbo DOHC

So they would fit in. The only problem is that some cables you might need to carry over to the car getting the engine.

But it is possible
