Why are vegas hotels so pricey this weekend ??

Spring Break for a lot of schools, March Madness, and there's at least two conventions going on.

If the prices are sky high and there is not a holiday, then it is probably because of a big convention. There must be a big convention there. Not to mention NCAA basketball and Spring Break.
If you want cheap prices, shop around for the best weekends.
