He was an Austrian monk who studied pea plants and how different characteristics appeared in a plant based on it's parents. For example, he showed that if one parent pea plant is TT (homozygous dominant for tall) and the other parent is tt (homozygous recessive for short), then all the offspring will be tall, no matter what. He used many traits (height, color of flowers, location of flowers, color of pea pods, shape of pea pods, color of peas, and shape of peas) to see how genes were passed down. Though he didn't entirely understand what genes were, he was the father of genetics.

Is that a complete questiong? Mendel can be called the father of genetics. He learned about genetics through his pea experiements.

He founded genetics even though he didn't know about genes. Because he was a monk, he had time on his hands. Peas grow fast so many generations can be studied in a short time.
