If this is a Syrian male you're referring to, then he should never be left in the cage with the female Syrian for more then the purpose of mating. He needs his own cage. He eats them because he sees them as a threat to him in the future.

If this is a Russian dwarf male you're referring to, then this is very unusual. The male and female dwarfs raise their babies together. The mom may eat them if she has too many for her to raise or they are sick to start with. Now the other breeds of dwarfs, you need to remove the male for a couple of days for mom/baby bonding, then put the males back and he'll help raise them just like the Russian males do.

I hope this helps you.

Both sexes actually eat their young. My wife had a male and female hamster and the female was the one who killed its own baby. The male didn't touch the baby. I just think they don't have maternal instincts or some hamsters are just evil.

Females can also have a tendency to eat their young. I had a tank and added a separator once i thought my female Russian dwarf hammy was going to pop, and well... she did... and they next evening, she decapitated 2 of her babies, and carried the 3rd into the water bowl, which was elevated by the way, so i know he didn't get himself in there. then after i let the male and female parents back together, she literally chewed his tail off. I separated them again and she chewed through Plexiglas wall and ate him again. :(

never had luck with hamster and gerbil babies---definitely remove dad ASAP.....also, go to a pet store and throw in live grasshoppers to compensate for any nutrition deficiency mom might have from giving birth

Territory and competition, the females may eat their young too, especially if you touch them.

Competition. Causes the female to start into estrus again.

Many animals do that.
I bet he ate the males and if it was another Mates brood.

to eliminate competition. they have no sense of incest, so the adult male will ensure his continued partnership without the threat of new comers
