The salt bridge allows ions to flow through, while physically separating the two solutions.

If there wasn't a salt bridge, depending on the cell configuration either:

A) The two solutions would physically mix, and the two solutions would subsequently fully react, non-electrochemically.

or

B) The two solutions would not mix. There would be no ionic connections between the two solutions, and the cell would not run.
