My five year old daughter dislocated her radius and Ulna, and broke off part of her humerus. She had surgery within hours, and had wires to hold it together. She is currently in a splint. It was 10 days ago, and although she is fairly active running around playing, she is still asking for pain releif constantly. When I questioned her activity, she told me that she "doesn't want to be sitting down taking medicine for the rest of her life, she wants to enjoy herself". Does anyone know how long it is going to keep hurting? I can tell it still hurts by the way she breathes, and she gets a slight temperature when it's hurting a lot.

If she is up and running around, she probably is under control as far as her pain goes. The best way to relieve pain post op for a fracture is to ice, elevate and use Ibuprofen if not allergic. As for her not wanting to be sitting down taking medicine for the rest of her life, that would be a response my nine year old who is gifted would have trouble coming up with let alone a five year old.

Since she is running around I would not worry much. My 4 yr old nephew broke his foot 6 months ago & had to have a splint. He broke the arch & snapped the bone in half he needed surgury as well They didn't want to put a plate in since he is still growing. He took pain medication every 4 hours for the pain and after 3 days he had to be in a wheel chair because he broke the splint. He had to learn how to walk again but he is still in pain so now my sister gives him children's tylenol!
It could keep hurting for at least another 2 weeks or more. Try to have her have a relax time. She could be doing too much & that is why it hurts. She could be doing to much to fast!! I would talk to her dr about the slight temperatures it might be something it might be nothing. Her doctor would want to know! Also talk to the dr about her wanting pain medication constantly!! He/She should be able to help you!!
Good Luck!!

I'm so sorry your daughter got injured like that. Be very careful to administer her pain meds only as the MD instructed...and not "on her request". I'm also sorry she is hurting, but I am happy to hear "she is running around and playing". That's what really matters with this 5 year old. I believe if she were truly distressed, she would not be playing. You might want to mention to your MD about the "slight temperatures", to be sure it's not related to some other problem. Some day this will be naught but a distant memory for your child....keep playing!

Sounds to me like she has her days and nights at a loss for words. perhaps attempt for the period of the day to make certain the home is gentle. ascertain you establish a competent habitual before mattress each and every nighttime. And whilst she has slept at nighttime time, whilst its daybreak and time for her to awaken returned, say "stable morning" to her. I did this with my son and he's a dream.
