Was there something that happened in the society or something about the culture of American back then that would have caused so many people to like pet rocks? I've researched how it got started, but what I'm really interested in is why? Why would so many people flock to the stores and wait for hours for a pet rock?

What I really meant to ask (and for most of you this would be the same question and answer) is what was happening around that era that allowed the pet rock idea to flourish? Were there new conveniences that sped up life so people thought a care-free pet would be a great idea instead of an actual living being? What was happening that allowed the fad to start instead of just being ignored?
