Was there something that happened in the society or something about the culture of American back then that would have caused so many people to like pet rocks? I've researched how it got started, but what I'm really interested in is why? Why would so many people flock to the stores and wait for hours for a pet rock?

What I really meant to ask (and for most of you this would be the same question and answer) is what was happening around that era that allowed the pet rock idea to flourish? Were there new conveniences that sped up life so people thought a care-free pet would be a great idea instead of an actual living being? What was happening that allowed the fad to start instead of just being ignored?

Well it was a fad-simple as that. Today why are so many women and girls obssesed with the oversized sunglasses that many wear? Another fad- who knows in a few years people may be laughing hysterically at them (if they aren't already). What people think is important varies with each generation- a pet rock may be appealing because it's commercialized to make it seem popular and it was a 'pet' that didn't defecate or urinate and didn't require any food. Oversized sunglasses cover a majority fo your face so you can look as shady and suspicious as you want- why did people rock bellbottom jeans? ugly sweaters? what's up with shirts 10 sizes to large? Trends and Fads- though the rock concept is really unique hmmm

They didn't have cell phones or Mp3s. Life was simpler back then. The pet rock thing was mainly for a joke. I've never heard of people waiting for hours for a pet rock though. Just going to a nearby riverbank or gravel pit would do it!! Something like mood rings just a novelty that wore off.

It was just a fad. I think that it shows how gullible the USA is. It proves that if it is the "in" thing we will go out and spend our money on it. I told my daddy I wanted to buy a pet rock one time and he told me I was crazy he had a whole driveway full of rocks and as soon as I got home he would take me over and let me have the "pick" of the litter!!!

It was mostly a big joke people got to look cool or funny. I'm sure if they had pet rocks right now tons of people would go out and by them for fun.
