This was in a text book for kids learning English as a second language. There was a list of sentences to complete:
My favorite color IS BLUE.
My favorite food IS PIZZA.
My favorite fruit ____________????????????
The problem I see is that "fruit" is a countable noun in this sentence, and countable nouns don't fit into this sentence structure. Try the possibilities:
My favorite fruit is apple --NO...
My favorite fruit are apple.-- NO...
My favorite fruit is an apple.--Sounds wrong,...
My favorite fruit is the apple -- I think this is actually correct but it still sounds stupid,...
What do you think?

After reading the first 15 answers it appears there is little consensus. I sure thought it was weird when I first saw it in the text book.
If you exchange "apple" with a fruit that we normally use as an uncountable noun then it works easily: "My favorite fruit is watermelon"... but most fruits aren't commonly used in uncountable form so you're stuck with these funny sounding sentences.
