kobe isn't the best ever! he is a great player and i'll give him that! but he has yet to prove that he is the greatest ever! if you are just gonna base it on scoring points then wilt chamberlain would've won hands down.
nobody's ever beaten his record of 100 points and just look at his stats compared to kobe's, the onlt double digit stat line kobe has is in points while wilt averaged double digits in points and rebounds and we're not talking of 10 RPG either but there was even a time when wilt was averaging 20+RPG.
People can't say kobe's the greatest just yet, I bet kobe himself wouldn't go as far as saying that he is the greatest (not that it proves him to be a humble guy or anything). He does have 3 rings but let us not forget who was with him during that great championship run...Shaquille O'Neal.
Look at kobe now, so what if he scores 65 or 81 or 55? His team is floundering right now, they're below .500 and are merely in the playoff race (8th spot) just because all the other teams below them are too weak to even make a case for the last spot.
Michael Jordan on the other hand, even if he never says it out loud...IS by far, considered and IS the generally accepted greatest player THUS FAR.
He did not become the greatest thought by scoring points, he became the greatest by imposing his will on the league and dominating the rest of the competition.
Never lost a championship series, champions 6 times without an imposing inside presence like Shaq, I said this before in another piece...history will tell us that all NBA Chamions thus far have always had a dominating big man.
Russell, Chamberlain, Willis Reed, Bill Walton, Olajuwon (which i seriously doubt if Michael hadn't retired), Shaq, Duncan, Robinson and even the pistons of 2005 had Big Ben and Rasheed , obviously those two are head and shoulders above of uhhhmm...Luc Longley?
Kobe never would've won those rings if it weren't for O'Neal...let's give credit where credit is due folks!

Long before Phil Jackson took over as the Lakers coach, I always thought that anyone including myself should be able to lead Lakers to a Championship with Shaq. If Kobe was the best player ever, the Lakers would have been a better team without Shaq. The Bulls never won without Michael, and Shaq won without Kobe, although I dont credit him for the Miami title. Also, scoring points doesnt alone make you a great player. It doesnt even make your team win. And even if it did, how many scoring titles has he won? In order to be a complete and dominate offensive player, you need to have a high field goal percentage. You cant just jack up shots, make some of them and be the best player. Compare his to Dwayne Wade's last year. Then look at Michael Jordan's career numbers, including his defensive numbers and consider the number of times that Michael Jordan was first team all defensive team, in addition to winning all the scoring titles while scoring more efficiently.
Also, how old are you? Did you never see Michael Jordan play? And consider this, if Kobe Bryant doesnt have a higher field goal percentage than his team average, is he really helping his team that much by throwing up a shot?

Are you serious? I can't believe you ignorant people keep posting this garbage every time Kobe goes for 50. Basketball is not ALL about scoring and neither is being a great player.
Look, Kobe has got along ways to go to catch Michael, he still needs 3 rings to catch Jordan, plus Kobe only got his rings because of Shaq, we'll count those as 1 and 1/2 rings so let's say he needs 5 more championships to surpass
Jordan, in that aspect at least.
Now let's talk about scoring. Well Kobe has one scoring title and he's currently in 2nd place this year in scoring, so if he does beat out Melo for the scoring title this year it will be his 2nd. Do you know how many Michael had? 10....thats right, 10. So Kobe needs one this year(questionable) and then 9 more to surpass Jordan in that aspect.
Ok now let's talk MVP's Jordan won 5 League MVP's and so far Kobe has zero, and Jordan won 6 Finals MVP's and at this point K0be zero (Shaq had 3 though). So to surpass Jordan he would need to win 6 League MVP awards which should be easy if he wins 9 more scoring titles. On top of that he needs 7 Finals MVP's which means he's to need a total of 7 more rings, not 5.
Fact, Michael Jordan was a great individual defender as well as team defender. Kobe is a ball hawker. Michael was on 9 All-Defensive first teams, as well as being Defensive Player of the Year in 1988. Kobe has made 3 All-Defensive first teams, but if the voters would watch games and not look at stats, they would see Kobe WILL NOT play team defense. He follows the all and does get steals, but gets burned far more than a first teamer should.
Well we won't get started on Olympics or National Championships
Kobe does have a leg up on Jordan when it comes to getting coaches fired, making great players leave, and being charged with felonies. Plus I bet Michael never bought his Wifey a $4 million dollar rock, thats classy.
I do think Kobe is a great player and I hate to rip on him, but you people make it so easy, he's not Jordan and he will never come close, just face it.

Kobe is not even on the same level as MJ. Jordan elevated the game of everyone around him, Kobe is selfish. Jordan was repeatedly on the all-defense team. Kobe couldn't guard you if he had a gun. Jordan was a leader on and off the court. Kobe is a baby on the court and a rapist off.
65 points?!! Dude, Wilt Chamberlain AVERAGED 50.4 for a whole season. In that season he had multiple games above 70 and 6 in a row above 50. Kobe isn't even in the same arena.
The bottom line is that there is more to being great then scoring a lot of points. If Kobe is the best ever, why can't he win without Shaq? Shaq won without Kobe. The lakers may not even make the playoffs. Outside of his rookie year, when did the Bulls miss the playoffs with Jordan on the court?
Kobe is probably top 5 of all time, but not number one. If he was number 1, the Lakers would be contenders every year.
1. Micheal Jordan (6 rings, 5 MVPs, all-time PPG leader)
2. Wilt Chamberlain (100 points! 4 mvp, 2 rings, 50ppg for a season)
3. Bull Russell (11 rings, re-invented is position)
4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6 MVP, 6 rings, alltime scoring leader)
5. Kobe? maybe, you have to consider Bird, Magic, Shaq, and possibly Lebron

10x better than Jordan? Jordan doubled him on the Rings, and the season MVP is 5-0; finals MVP 6-0. Jordan was a multiple time slam dunk champion - against Dominique Wilkins (who was Kobe competing against?). As for heoric moment, Jordan had too many; and look at his scoring average after adding those low years in wizards.
By the way, Jordan had won a defensive player of the year award.
Damn, why am I even listing these stats for a player I used to hate so much (cause he beat Barkley).

Best ever? Far from it. Wilt Chamberlain has over 40 sixty point games. That was Kobe's third. Elgin Baylor averaged a triplle double for the 61-62 season. Kobe isn't even averaging a double double. He may be the best player right now, but don't call him the best ever. BTW Bill Russell has 9 rings.

He isn't the best ever, but it's also unfair not to place him up with the greats.
Karl Malone never won a championship, but is it fair to argue he isn't one of the greatest in the game?I mean, he played with John Stockton, one of the top points guards of all time and still didn't win. Kobe has won championships. Plural.
Magic won, but only with Kareem, so let's claim Magic wasn't one of the best either. Just because a player has won a championship with another player doesn't take away anything from his greatness.
And also, Kobe's been on the All-defensive 1st team four times. So, it's clear he doesn't play defense, right?
Lakers' FG% Home 0.463 Away 0.464 - Kobe's .458
So about a .005-.006% difference. Granted, something as insignificant as this % can possibly be attributed to bail out shots when the 24 second clock is going to expire.
Wizard's FG% Home 0.453 Away 0.469 - Gil's .419
About a .04-.05% difference.
Boy, Gilbert makes his team suck, doesn't he?

Kobe is a basketball? One thing that he has to do in order to be considered better than M.J, and that's be a leader. When you can rally a team like MJ did and be unselfish. MJ coulve had more impressive numbers thought his career but instead showed what a true leader is all about and involved his team in every aspect of the game. When SHAQ was with the LAkers he was such a ME ME ME player, that's why it fell apart, gee what a coincidence that almost immediately shaq takes a Championship to MIAMI.

a great player yes...but the best ever? hardly....he will never win another championship without a shaq type player in there to compliment him....the mere fact that shaq has won it again at miami and the lakers are nowhere near the team they were when shaq left should've been glaringly obvious to you....sure he scores many points but in the end being great is not about scoring points and making flashy plays...it is about winning....bill russell played in 12 nba finals in his 13 year career,,,,he would've won 12 titles and ten in a row if he wasn't injured in his second season...thats why russell was the greatest...he didnt score the most points, but he did all that was necessary to win...and in the history of the nba...there is no bigger winner than the great bill russell

Ahh! I know Kobe is Unbelievable, but the fact that Michael Jordan had really great Championships 3-year-consecutives, TWICE! (1990-1992, and 1995-1997) I think.... You can't just bash him like that! He is still THE best legend ever because his games were so exciting :D
and Not to mention MJ landed all the MVPs for all the championship games they won. hehe
