I didn't sign up for the orientation right away, because I thought I would be free all summer and I would be fine, signing up later for a later time, however, my grandmother is dying, and my family booked us a flight to Japan for a stay of 5 weeks in June to August, to stay with the rest of the family. The only orientation times left are those in July to August. Ugh, I know I should have signed up earlier, but at the time, I was not even considering going to this college, but due to a recent, severe financial crisis I am most likely going here. I was also waiting to earn enough money for the flight and orientation fee/ other stuff AND the only computer and internet I have available were not working for a long time. GUUH, what should I do? This is such a small issue compared to my grandma's health, but its mandatory. Should I call the college, what should I say? I can't bother my parents right now, and don't want to add to their stress over this and family leeches. Help me please...

Sorry to hear about your grandmother's health. If you are close to her, it's painful to have to deal with this kind of situation. I've been in your shoes before, but my grandmother took a turn. Unfortunately, it's a year later and I'm still coping with her death and not the best feeling when someone you grew up with all of a sudden just disappear.

I say 'family' comes first and just talk to the admission counselor about your situation. Usually, they are good about things. Don't worry too much and also talk to the airline agent about moving either the date up or get a refund.

During your orientation, you will most likely get a tour of the university and meet with an academic adviser to choose your classes but nothing that cannot be done at another time. But you should call your school and I am sure they will squeeze you in at a better time.

get a friend to go usually there is no id check and you will never see those people again.
have your friend take notes.
