I just posted the first half of my question a few minutes ago. The second part of this puzzle is that my left nipple is flat. My right one was, but the baby was able to pull it out while breastfeeding. I have to use a nipple shield to feed her from the right side, but I can tell she doesn't get a lot because she doesn't swallow often. I can't pump too much from that side - it won't 'latch on' to the flat nipple. I want to be able to up my supply before it stops altogether. My daughter is 6 weeks 1 day.

Try to get in touch with the La Leche League. I think I spelt it right. When I breast fed all four of my children, they were extremely helpful with my questions. Maybe you can find them on line. Computers didn't exist in my time. lol They also have fun meeting at homes where mom's hold these meetings, and you can bring the babies.

Just a quick note that breast shield can sometimes lessen the supply on the side you are using it on... this may not be the resolve BUT if you can eliminate the shield as quickly as possible that would be a good start.

My supply is really uneven - even now at 9 months! When you express you will never get as much out as a baby can, so even if you think there is not much in that side there is more than you think. You can offer the lesser side for every feed and express out of the other so that supply does not drop there... ummm sorry I cannot think of anything else personally but here are a couple of websites

It should even out. Your breasts are supply and demand. Right now where it is harder for her to get milk out of the one side. It is not knowing the demand in order to supply. She is learning also. Once she gets the hang of it, it will produce more. You are doing the right thing, keep pumping so it will produce more. The pump should help pull out your nipple. You can put the pump on right before you feed her. To start the flow and to pill the nipple out some. My first son I had to do this, where he was so small and I had gotten so big. He could not latch on. I just kept getting bigger and firmer. A friend told me about using the pump like that. It helped alot. Good luck.

Medela breast pumps might be your best bet. You could get a hospital strength breast pump from a pharmacy. They also have nipple shields that can be used with the pump. So you can pump with more ease. If you have a lacticion consultant she should be able to give you more information on where to get a pump. Medela has an 800 number that you can call for locations that rent out the hospital strength pump. I don't know what type of pump you are using but if you are using a hand pump it's not gonna do it. You need to use a good electric breast pump.

I had the EXACT same scenario...left flat nipple. I used a breast pump which helped but kinda hurt...I also used the shield things from Madela that are used to pull out the nipple (let me know if you need more info on them if you don't have them). Anyway, once she got good at breastfeeding (are you exclusivly doing it?) she pulled it out on her own. I used to spend 3 minutes trying to get a latch on that side and now (9 weeks) I just place her inthe vacinity and she starts smacking her lips and pulls it out...email me if you need more info on anything I said/used...

Keep at it, that is the only thing you can do. I had flat nipples and they are fine now. One of them took a little longer to become "un-flat" but it happened.

Hey dear, this is something serious I suppose. It is dangerous to you & the baby. I suggest immidately go to a good Dr. & consult. Before it is too late. I'm not sure but the cause of the problem might be your life partner who might have played in a wrong way with your breast. Take care!
