Sam Houston started out as a US Representative to congress from Tennessee. He then moved to Texas in 1832, which at the time was part of Mexico. In November of 1835 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Texas militiar. In March of 1836 Texas declared independance from Mexico, and Sam Houston used his militia to defend the newly formed Republic of Texas against the forces of Mexican dictator and general Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana. Santa Ana was repsonsible for the massacre at the Alamo, but was eventually defeated by Sam Houston and his army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. Following the expulsion of the Mexican Army from Texas, Sam Houston used his popularity to be twice-elected as president of the new Texas Republic. When the United States annexed Texas in 1845, Sam Houston became a senator for the new State of Texas and served from 1846 to 1859. He died four years later in 1863.
