I am being bitten by very small black bugs which fly so fast and are hard to see. the bite really hard and i will not see them but just feel the bite. i have seen them running away sometimes and they look like the fruit flys but the fruit ones don't bite. any body had such an experience. i just moved to the south and was wondering whether this is a Carolina bug.

It sounds like the same darn bug we have up in New England...ONLY EARLIER....
They are called No See-UMS
Really because you cannot see them.
Use a Mosquito Spray with the pesticide DEET
It should be listed as the primary ingredient.

And nope it is an entire East Coast Bug!

I agree with the No-See-Ums which are actually biting midges. The are a real painful nuisance in the early morning and evenings and daytime when cloudy. Some people call them sand flies ......maybe these are what you have, but I strong suspect you have the midges.

Depending on the species, they can be found near water, just highly organic but moist soil or near manure piles. They are not found where the soils are dry.

In the U.S., the biting midges are primarily a nuisance and the major medical issue is allergic reactions to the bites. However, in Central and South America, western and central Africa, and some Caribbean islands, biting midges are the vectors of filarial worms. These parasites cause infection in humans that produces dermatitis and skin lesions because the adult worms are located in the skin.

Check all the windows of your homes for proper screening. Patio screens also need to be tight. The common 16 mesh screen will still allow the midges passage so either use a smaller mesh (which also restricts air flow) or treat the screens with long lasting insecticide.

Repellents containing DEET work. Also many people report pennyroyal rubbed on the skin will repell the insects. I'd try the herbal repellents especially if you expect frequent outdoor exposure during the early a.m. and evening time.

Biting midges and other insects are the reason so many people who live in moist areas live "indoors" and don't open their widows at all, relying on air condition for ventilation.

This sounds like what we in California call no see ums.Maybe they would be attracted by one of those bug zapper.O r you can go the low tech route and smear a hard hat with Vaseline and when they land on the hat they get stuck in it like fly paper .What ever works best for you.
