That's a great question! I expect that it was primarily based on the completion of the WWII. The baby boomer generation exploded on the scene which created a high competition for livelihood. They had to fight for income, goods, and services since there were so many people trying to get ahead and live "the American dream".

Because of this competition, the following generation, "60's" children, had to continue to fight except they were youthful and without any obligations. So the fight went public, perspective changed from "what can I do for my country" to "what does my country do for me". Additionally, family ties broke down since this generation was possibly the most greedy generation ever! (most of America's inheritance was spent by this generation and laws have been continuously changing to benefit this generation at the expense of they're offspring)

During this struggle, the focus went from what you could do to advance to what obstacles you could remove to advance; thus the small group coalitions. These coalitions were able to change laws in order to protect themselves and thus they were able to grow. This is why the small group interest is now the lead at the expense of the majority.

In conclusion, it is sad to say this since so much of the achievements which small groups have made were so positive. However, the over dramatized conflicts, the overbearing burden to the majority, and rationalized beliefs of the few have greatly out done the positive purpose which was originally intended.

For example:prisoner rights-"a prisoner can not be forced to work since imprisonment is punishment for the offense" This is irrational since prisoner are afford food, clothing, shelter, exercise, communication, and entertainment at the taxpayers expense. While a prisoner is afforded all these services because of small group actions, you the citizen must work in order to eat, sleep, be clothed, make a phone call, and purchase a newspaper. Talk about getting it all wrong.

Yeah, and screw handicapped parking spaces.

Because if they really NEED a parking spot up close they can wait for it like the rest of us. Since when did their time become more important than everybody elses?

And if they are so severely handicapped its not like they are in a hurry to get to work or anything, because the rest of us are paying for them anyways. You would think they would be happy to let you hurry into the store so you can get back to work so that they can get a check at the end of the month.

How come the "many" are treated like second class citizens?
Hundreds of people literally going out of our way every single day, and wasting time... just so someone else doesn't have to wait 10 minutes for a parking spot closer to McDonalds.

... and to think, McDonalds has a drive through window, if they can't wait 10 minutes, they don't even have to get out of their car!

Because we seem to place more value on a person's financial status than on their humanity. We've become seekers of pleasure rather than men who uphold what is good and just. So the haves and their wants/desires/wishes are the focal point of this world.

um, it's kind of always been like that. It's always been about protecting the rights of the wealthy, white landholders. Hasn't really changed.
