I have found that it is actually a combination of the prenatal vitamins and the hormones. I have been on prenatal vitamins for about 4 years straight now preparing for my first son and the combination of breastfeeding and my second son and breastfeeding him. The prenatals made a difference, but when I was about a month pregnant each time, the rate of hair and nail growth increased dramatically.

I have had horrible nails my whole life - peeling, folding, ripping. While pregnant, they got way better! Still not great, but then I was still rockclimbing. It started a few months in.
I'm still taking my prenatals. Sorry to say, my nails peel, fold, shred and rip again. Bleah.
My hair didn't seem to get thicker or grow faster at all. It DID get darker, my hairstylist commented on it. He knew how far along I was by the length of the dark band! The one change that happened with my hair was it got drier - I no longer had to wash it every day. Every three days sufficed. Still nursing, so still a bit dry, but not like while I was pregnant.

I had terrible morning sickness so I didn't take vitamins for awhile....but my nails and hair both grew like weeds!! It happened from the get go.
However, I have friends that have has this happen from just the vitamins.
So, I guess it could be both!!

It is both, but I have heard that the vitamins have much to do with it. Also, donnot get your hair colored or permed while pregnant. You will hate it, and the hair seems to fall out more. UGH Had it happen to me.

First off, don't get your hopes up! I didn't get the beautiful nails or the "glow." It doesn't happen to everyone. Though I did get the heartburn, hemmorhoids and vomiting! Anyways, it's the prenatals.

The pre-natel vitamins are the real reason it grows so fast, although the change in your body chemistry does contribute.
