The best advice I can give you is to get a can of spray wasp/insect killer that allows you to shoot at them from about 10 feet away; that way, you're out of the way, and the wasps won't look on you as the source of the attack. The cans usually say not to use it indoors, but I have used it (with plenty of ventilation, of course), and have never had a problem.

If the nests are already there, you'll have to spray. You may even want to bring in an exterminator to get all of them, so you don't miss any of the ones that are inside your house, and so that you don't poison your family. After they're gone and you have a fresh start, keep them away by making traps. Use plastic pop bottles. Just cut off the tops and invert them. Pour in a little fruit juice and put them all over the place.
If you have bare spots on the lawn, look for holes that are bigger and rounder than an ant hole, and screw a cut off pop bottle bottom (16 ounce size) into the ground over the hole. I also use the tops of the big glass Yankee candles, and even small canning jars. Anything that will sit over the hole and not be moved by the wind. My moss garden looks like a space ship for about 2 weeks every summer, but then I have no wasps.
You can also put peanut butter on the ground near a hole and skunks will come at night to eat up the wasp larvae.
I had to spray the first year we moved here, but now the traps take care of it and I don't see any nests.

I work for a pest company and this is the time when all the wasps are looking to build the nests!!! i ahte them so much lol! but there isnt a "long term" solution, buy Wasp Freeze or similar spray cans from ACE hardware or any store thatt carries this product and spray them in the evening or in the morning, they are less active at this time and 90% of the wasps will be on the nest(easy kill). After spraying them, knock down the nest and repeat this process as they come :D

If it is just a nest hanging from the facia board, use a spray after sundown when all of the wasps or hornets are back at the nest. If the nest has been built under the eve boards, call a qualified exterminator. And be sure they are wasps or hornets. If they are bees, they will have to be removed alive; it is illegal to kill bees in most areas. Wasps are not hornets/hornets are not bees/bees are not wasps.

There is a long distant spray for wasps. It comes with a little plastic thing that makes it spray for several feet. After they have gone into their nests before night fall, is a good time to spray. The nest will need to be soaked with the spray.

There's a spray can called hot shot that can kill them from ten feet away.It works relay well.If you can knock there nests down at night they won't build there again. There are traps and one that you mix this nasty smelling stuff in a bag and hang it up at least eight foot high that works well You can buy this stuff at feed stores. You might run a search and see if you can knock the nests down after dark.I been stung a couple of times and it makes me feel a little bit sicker every time.

The above advice is good, the only thing I can ad is to spray them at night when they are all on the nest, that way you get the adults and the unborn wasps.
