I am not sure if they had O2 sensors check that, if not advance ur timing and check for any vaccum leaks, if none of that works just turn up the idle a little bit, its cheating but at least u won't have to give it any gas, because if no vaccum leaks and the timing is good, its probably the cam.

Is the 'check engine' light coming on?The same light may say Service engine soon" Either one, they do the same job, and that is to detect any emission problems, sensor failure, and fuel problems.Anyway, This vehicle is carbureted and may have vacuum leaks that could come from various hoses, intake manifold gaskets, and any other vacuum operated item. Some leaks are easily detected and some may require a vacuum test done on vacuum sysyem,You can have a diagnostis test done if that light has come on during runtime. This can be done at any Auto Zone Parts Store for free.If no light, has it had a recent tune-up?Fuel filters replaced. Many things can cause a stalling condition.I just hope in your case it is a simple fix as they are a nice Ol' car.I had a 1983 in 1987 and owned it for 5 years. It had the 3.8 V6 automatic

Checking vac hoses, fuel filter and carb settings are all good ideas as I read in previous answers....All I wanted to add was the info on the check/service engine light. Auto Zone can read code on cars that are equipped with OBD/II computer systems...these are in cars built '96 or newer, your car's computer can be read by you if you go to Auto Zone and obtain a GM Code Reader key...they are free at the parts counter. Ask someone there if they will show you how...veterans who enjoy older GMs will know what to do and be glad to show you. Good Luck

i own a repair shop and these had a bad problem with wearing timing chains and gears out in them id say yours is really bad,and it throws everything out of whack on them,id at least pull the cover and check it,last one of those i took apart,it just about fell off in my hand, and once i replaced it ,it did run a lot better, even though the cam shaft was about wore out in it,it still ran good and has enough power to pull its self, good luck i hope this helps.
