I was looking at e-bay and I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-5-USB-2-0-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Case-External-Portable_W0QQitemZ120097543894QQcategoryZ41911QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I was wondering what are these cases for? There are 2.5" and 3.5" ones and inside there is this chip. Is it for internal hard drives?

And also, if they are for internal hard drives, can I plug them into laptops and computers?

These cases are for you to purchase a separate hard disks, put it inside, and use it as a portable storage that can take from one machine to another by simply unplugging and plugging into the USB ports. Some of them are powered by the USB port, some of them require an external power connection.

It is really handy to have....

Yes, you can use it with laptops and desktops as long as they have a spare USB port. (some are used with firewire ports)

i've got under no circumstances used a casing, yet i'm thinking in case you would be able to desire to alter the jumper settings. in step with hazard attempt adjusting the jumpers to slave, (see the case of the hard drive for a diagram--you will would desire to place the plastic plug over the right pins) then going into BIOS and notice no count if it fairly is able to properly known the previous HDD. you need to attempt unplugging the dell's HDD, then see if the laptop will boot from the oldpersistent. have been you able to diagnose no count if the HDD failed because of the fact of a actual failure or a logical failure? frequently you hear unusual noises from the HDD while it fairly is a actual failure. If it fairly is a logical failure, which it sounds like it fairly is, you are able to acquire some application to retrieve the information (in spite of the reality which you would be able to would desire to pay).
