I was looking for a used car, and it said that they installed a "turbo" - what is that?

Here is a good URL to go to that explains in detail what a turbocharger is and what it is designed to do. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

I would however be wary on buying a car that a turbo was installed on. I would first check to see it that car was factory turbocharged and they just replaced a bad worn out turbo or added a upgrade. If it was installed to a stock NA(naturally aspirated) engine, I would get someone that knows something about turbos to see if it was done correctly. A bad installation could do damage to the engine.

Turbo is short for turbocharger.

It is a device that is connected to the exhaust very near where it comes out of the engine.

Long ago, engineers determined they could use the power from the escaping exhaust to spin a turbine wheel that would shove air into the engine under pressure and increase horspower.

The part that sits in the exhaust is connected to another fan like device that will blow air into the engine. With more air going in, you can now add more fuel to create more power. The nice thing about a turbocharger is that it allows a small engine to have the power of a bigger engine when you need it, but the rest of the time under normal driving you get the higher fuel mileage of a small engine.

A good thing, don't you think??

Lots of small cars have them and lots of big diesel trucks use them too!

A turbo is short for turbocharger. Iti s a compressor that runs off an engine's exhaust gas pressure that in turn forces more air into the cylinders. It greatly improves performance but they can be expensive. It would help if we had the make and model of the car.

Just the short name for turbo charger.
A turbo charger is a forced induction device used in internal combustion engines to improve engine performance by forcing compressed air into the combustion chambers, allowing more fuel to be burned, resulting in a larger power output.

Could be one of 2 things. A turbo charger was replaced, or a 'turbo' muffler is under it.
A turbo charger is a pressure compressor that moves more air/fuel into the intake. They are driven by exhaust gasses from the rerouted exhaust pipe.

no, putting a intake on your grand prix does not positioned you in with the ricers. a ricer is somebody who has some 4 cylinder automobile (ninety 8% of the time) that places a great dumb exhaust, physique equipment, wing, rims, stickers, neons, and communicate approximately how quickly there automobile is going to be whilst they get there engine swap. all your doing is givnig your automobile somewhat extra means, and somewhat extra effectual gasoline economic device. no longer something incorrect with that. stable good fortune
