toque = 1). a brimless and close-fitting hat for women, in any of several shapes. 2). a velvet hat with a narrow, sometimes turned-up brim, a full crown, and usually a plume, worn by men and women esp. in 16th-century France.
tuque = 1).a heavy stocking cap worn in Canada. 2). A knitted woolen cap in the form of a cylindrical bag often with tapered ends that is worn with one end tucked into the other.

A touque is a hand knit hat with a small tail its design is French Canadian it was mostly worn by the French Voyagers during the early 1600's to pretty close to the end of the fur trade era pre 1840. The only reason I know this is I am very involved in the " buckskinners " which is a living history renactment
