What book should I read to my seven year old boy next?

Question

His favorite has been 'Where The Red Fern Grows'. He liked 'Little Britches', but he found 'Treasure Island's' language difficult to follow.
Is there a LIST of "Read Aloud books" that breaks down what kids like at what age?

Wow! He sounds quite advanced. I loved Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel,The Great Green Turkey Creek Monster, and the Harry the Dirty Dog series at that age.
For a bit more advanced books, try Charlotte's Web, The Moffats, My Side of the Mountain, The Box Car Children, The Pink Motel, Henry Reed, Inc. The Sugar Creek Gang series, Homer Price, Ribsy,Freddy the Pig series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Great Brain.
Try authors Gordon Korman,Carol Ryrie Brink, Beverly Cleary, and Robert McCloskey.

When I was his age I liked Where the red fern grows and the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. I also liked E.B. White -- The Trumpet of The Swan and I liked A wrinkle in time. My son is 8 and he loves Junie B. Jones and anything by Judy Blume...Double Fudge, etc. Its great to hear of fathers reading to their children.

I think it's great that you read together! I used to read to my kids all the time. They are 10 & 11 & would rather read alone. I miss sharing the stories together, so enjoy it while you can.

We've read all the Narnia books, the like Lemony Snicket, Ronald Dahl books: James & the Giant Peach, Matlida, The Witches, The Harry Potter books, The Word Eater.

How about Rudyard Kipling's *Just So Stories*? It consists of short, fanciful accounts of "How the Leopard Got His Spots" and "How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin." I don't think it would be as challenging as *Treasure Island* -- but even if it proved a bit difficult, it would be worth hanging on to & coming back to in a year or so. I still treasure my memories of this book.

I have a wonderful choice. Many Moons by James Thurber. A Caldecott winner if I remember correctly. My favorite book as a child. My son adored it too. I still own my copy. It is a children's classic. C.

when I was seven I loved the Horriable Harry books. They are short but not really educational. I also like the bunnicula series. I also just wanted to tell you that it is great that you read to your children. It will set them put to love to read and be good at it. I hope he will one day find comfort in books. Great Job!
