I unplugged it and then turned it on and the power button had to be held in longer, but it started up. Is this a bad power button?

Not necessarily. There are some systems out there that for one reason or another get stuck in a sleep mode (even if you didn't select that option). Unplugging it for a few seconds, hitting the power button, then plugging it back in will wake it up every time (as long as the power supply isn't failing).

I've seen quite a few Gateways and HP desktop computers doing that where I work. It's more common on laptops than it is in a desktop, however...

Sounds a bit like it.
If you want to check you can open up your computer and look for the front panel connectors on the motherboard (the wires from the power button will lead you to it).
There should be some sort of diagram beside the front panel connectors that show you which two pins control the power. You can remove the power buttons wire and use a paper clip to bridge the pins.. if it starts up and shuts off fine this way then it could be a problem with the actual button becomming stuck.

No, your little sister spilled Coca-Cola in the front of it while you weren't around. She made me promise not to tell you, but she didn't say anything about writing to Yahoo answers.
