e56 is the 2001 - 2005 BMW M3 model engine.. the older m3 has a e46. im wondering if the e46 can be replaced with the e56 engine?

e56 isn't a BMW designation at all, and "e" designates body style, not engine; "s" denotes engine build. The 2001-2006 M3 was an e46 body style, but the engine designation is S54.

But yes, the e36 (previous M3) came with a 321 hp I6 (the S52) in Europe, so the S54 engine will fit.

Im pretty sure that you mean if the newer Bmw m3 (E46) engines fit into the chassis of the older m3s (E36). My friend who owns a garage fit a E46 engine into a E36 bmw. It worked fine. The e36 cars have a lighter chassis so an e46 engine fitted into that chassis will have a higher acceleration since it weighs lighter.

yes they can be. swapping them into E30s is a pretty common swap too. I think the E56 and E46 is based on the same engine, so it should be a pretty direct swap.
