He earned a degree from South West Texas State Teachers College in 1930. I can't seem to find exactly what his degree was in but one would have to assume that it was a BA or BS in education.

He would later teach in Sam Houston High School and in Welhausen School, there to mostly very poor Mexican-American children. Stories say that he would bring loaves of bread to class with him, just so his students would have something in their stomachs and thus could better concentrate on their studies.

I've heard it said that he was somewhat insecure about his degree, not in general but only when around Ivy League types in the White House.
