I'm a fan of both, but I never watched the earlier episodes or original Star Trek movies.
Star Trek (especially Next Gen and consecutive "spin offs") deal with the human condition, and explore the idea of humanity.
Star Wars deals more with the power surrounding the universe and the ultimate conflict of good vs. evil.
May the force be with you while you live long and prosper.

Star Trek Deep Space 9 were the best series of the Star Trek franchise.
Star Wars to me was lame although the costumes were great. Think about it in this way if Star Wars were so great why not make them into series that would have withstood the test of time.
Star Trek series usually last for several years and inspire many franchises. Not to mention all of the books that are coming out with different Star Trek themes.

Star Wars by far, because you can catch up on this much faster than on "Star Trek" and when you do you can not get enough of it.
My mother-in-law is a "Trekkie" and she tried to "hook me up" on Star Trek, but after season 5 I got so bored, that had to bow out very graciously (the way when you still are expecting some presents for Christmas not just a picture of her flipping me off).
My vote is for Star Wars and I really hope there will be No. 7 very soon.

they're hard to compare because star wars happens in the past (a long, long time ago) and star trek happens in the future. George Lucas made star wars mystical (the force) while Gene Roddenberry made star trek as scientifically sound as possible. it terms of preference, i like both... although i lean towards star trek if i want to exercise my brain. i am dissappointed with the later star trek offerings though.

You like playing with fire don't ya?
I grew up loving both, and hating most of the freaky fans of both.
You know, the ones that dress up like supporting cast of the movies and pretend to act out parts of the movies while they wait in line. Yeah, I hate those guys.
But, I love the movies, play the games and so forth.
