I have an HP dv5220us, with Windows xp media center. I don’t play a lot of cd’s but a month or so back I tried and got no sound. I didn’t think much of it. Now it still doesn’t play and I have tried every thing I can think of. I have up dated the driver. I have done some things and restarted it….still no luck. I do get the sounds…like when Windows opens or closes. I have Conexant High Definition Audio. What can I do next? I know how to use a computer, but I am not very good at configuring and all that stuff. So, if you can help please make it step by step. Thanks.

Go to "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment" and click on Volume Control. Under the Options menu at the top, select Properties. Make sure CD Audio is selected and hit OK.

You'll see in one of the columns "CD Audio". Make sure it's not muted and that the slider isn't all the way down. If that's not the problem, then go to "Options -> Advanced Controls". A new button called Advanced will appear. Click it and make sure "Enable Digital Output" is checked.

Your Dirvers are working properly, otherwise you may not get any audio at all.
Double click the speaker icon on the bottom right corner of your desktop. (If you can't find it, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices).
Click on the sound Tab (If you gone through Control panel)
OR
Just double click the speaker icon,
Now you may see the Volume Control box, un check all boxes with mute, Increase all volumes to maximum. Thats all
Smile and enjoy the music now.
If still any problem, you can PM me. :)

Check to see that the CD Player volume is not muted or set low.

Just double click the speaker Icon in the taskbar

There are volume control switches on my HP right on the left side near the front. Be glad you didn't hit the wireless switch instead! It took me half an hour to figure out why I couldn't connect!!

If you're not recieving any sounds what so ever then you'll probably need a new sound card! Good Luck with that.
