I'm moving out west from Chicago to Los Angeles at the end of 2007

My question concerns job outlook

I work a decently well paying customer service position here in Chicago and I'm concerned about finding similar employment in Los Angeles.

I have a degree (in the arts), but I also have work experience and I'm not trying to "make it" as anything career wise but do want to be involved in the entertainment industry. Is it more difficult to find work in Los Angeles?

Finding work isn't too difficult, the problem is making enough to compensate for the expense of living in Los Angeles.

Rents are high.

You need a car because public transportation has a lot of shortcomings. Because you need a car you pay gas and insurance prices that are much higher than the midwest.

Everything else costs more because the buiness owners have to make enough to pay the high rents and expenses.

You don't have high heating bills, but air conditioning can be as much or more during the summer in LA versus winter months in Illinois.

Well, LA is a good place to go for arts / entertainment careers. I have a list of job sites to try. http://www.ridleypa.com/jobs.html
Skip the last one. Thats for Philly.
It might be a good idea to get a PO Box out there soon and when you start applying for jobs you can use that so that the companies don't see an out of state address. Many times they don't like to hire from out of state.

No, it's not to difficult to find work in the city of Los Angeles proper - and you won't have to pay those high heating bills, either.

Check the job postings on one of the online sites (monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs, and so on.) That should give you a good idea of the possibilities in your chosen field.

Best of luck and welcome to the West. :)

Better off in Arizona, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, Washington (state) than California. Cost of living will kill you. Traffic will make you want to kill yourself. I-94 is simple traffic compared to the Santa Monica.
