Imagine having a three year old sitting there asking questions. Why is the sky blue?
Why are roses different colors?
Why does the moon look like it's smiling sometimes?
How come soap bubbles are round?
Why do skunks smell so badly?
If you don't remember how to think like a three year old, borrow a neighbors kid and get them started asking questions. Don't try to give him a 'real' answer. Imagine he's just giving you a hard time and knows that you're 'just teasing' then make up something really fantastic. Have you seen those commercials where the little girl explains how they put milk into cheese slices by pouring out the milk and rolling over it with a steam roller? - try something like that.
Have fun.

I could just write a tall tale for you, but English class is like a learning process, right? So, I won't. I'll give you some pointers, though. Think of a nature place on Earth, or in the Universe, that's kind of a big deal. Grand Canyon is taken (Paul Bunyan), but there are still others. Maybe try something or some place that you've always been fascinated by. Then come up with a character that kinda goes along with that landmark. Even in fiction you can ask the questions who, what, where, when, and why. These questions will ALWAYS help you when writing a story, essay, paper, or even a tall tale. Good luck!

How about a woman - we don't have many tall tales about women, do we?
So how about a Xena-type woman who would ride across the plains of America with her own magnificent herd of pure-white Arabian horses. And when they reached the Pacific Ocean she and her horses loved to go dashing into the ocean to swim and play every morning. But the beaches were all rocky, with gigantic boulders strewn all over the place, so "Xena" (how about giving her your own first name?) and her beautiful creatures would gallop the entire length of the Pacific coast and back every morning at sunup until the entire coast was eventually turned into beautiful golden sand under the hooves of her magnificent steeds.
Or something like that. But I do think your hero should be female - we need some equal time.
Good luck - :)

Make up a tale about a guy named Yukon Jack. He could be from Texas (or any hot state). He goes to Alaska, the Yukon, to find gold. Since he's from a hot state he never had to build a fire before. Now, in Alaska he does. He tries to strike flint and steel to make a fire but all he gets are sparks. Eventually it gets so cold the sparks kind of melt through the sky. No one knows what happened to Yukon Jack but we know he's still up there and still trying to start the fire. His melting sparks can be seen as the Northern Lights.

I think it's easier to start with a phenomenon -- lightning, volcanoes, sleep. Create a character who could be responsible for this phenomenon. It works well if you make it into a life lesson...the moral of the story

Start when you were a little girl. Tell a story something like cinderella or snow white. Tell how you were on an adventure or a mission and you got lost and met your knight in shining armour. He found you under a tree crying and he helped you get back home.
