Though technically a commoner, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was of royal descent.

After WW!, European royalty had been decimated, and with the consolidation of the German states, the numerous small duchies that furnished royal brides were abolished.

Since Prince Albert was not expected to succeed to the throne, there was no opposition to the marriage. In fact, it was a love match, and King George V and Queen Mary were delighted. The King, in particular, was very fond of his daughter-in-law, and even allowed her to be late for dinner without a reprimand!

While not royalty and technically a commoner, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was hardly what one thinks of from the term - her father was a Lord and she could claim direct descent from King Henry VII.

Be that as it may - Prince Albert of York (the future George VI) was the 2nd son of George V and was not expected to ever ascend to the throne. Thus, there wasn't as much concern about whether his wife was royal or not. It would still have been frowned on for him to marry a true commoner, but Elizabeth's aristocratic (if not technically noble) birth made her an acceptable wife.

Why not? His sister Mary had already married the Viscount Lascelles, another commoner. This had already set a precedent, and as another poster has said, Bertie was not heir to the throne. After WW1 there were a lot fewer reigning European royals, and I think the Windsors were keen to shore up their 'British' image by letting him marry a Scot rather than a foreigner. As well, she was of very good lineage and a lovely girl.

Because at the time of his marriage it was expected that his elder brother David would be the next king reigning as Edward VIII but he wanted to marry a divorced woman so he was forced to abdicate before being crowned and Prince Albert became George VI.

While she was technically a commoner she was a direct descendant of King Robert I of Scotland and King Henry VII of England.

They were married years before he became the reigning monarch and as he was not the eldest some it was not expected he would become King. Actually his marrying a commoner was considered a modernization of the monarchy.
