Which is "better" (some of these are facts, and others are opinions):
Electronics - Japan is more highly developed in this area
Cost of Living - South Korea is cheaper (still expensive)
Food - Both (I just can't decide!)
Traditional Clothing - I like Japanese yukata/jinbei, but Korean hanbok are good maternity wear
Martial Arts - I like the Japanese history of martial arts from farmers, so I'll say Japan, although Tae Kwon Do is certainly respectable!
Animation - Japan has a better-developed animation base
Sports - Typically Japan does better (overall in Olympics, but also in general)
Winter Olympics - South Korea is stronger
Summer Olympics - Japan has more medals
Size - Japan is larger
Population - Japan has a larger population
Physical Beauty (people, I mean) - South Korea
Height - I believe Koreans are taller on average
Build - Korean men tend to be more muscular and Korean women tend to have larger bust size than Japanese
Music - I like Japanese music better (both are good, though)
Length of History - the Japanese are currently considered to be older
Age - Japanese tend to live longer
Written language - Korean hangeul is very easy (Japanese takes a lot more time to master, even for natives)
Popularity of Plastic Surgery - More popular in South Korea
Suicide Rate - higher in Japan
Religion - South Koreans tend to be more religious
Films - Japan does horror the best, South Korea does drama like no other country! Both have good action movies

Those are so random, but they are some comparisons!

Japan

South Korea is a bit boring to me, although my wife likes some of the shopping places there.

Having lived in both countries I have a much greater fondness for South Korea. The cherry blossoms that the Japanese love so much actually came from South Korea. It was a Korean monk who gave the Japanese their language in the first place so there are many similarities.
The Korean sense of humour is more aligned to the West. Saving face is not an issue as it is with the Japanese.
People of both countries are hard working.
South Korea have beaten Japan hands down at building ships with Hyundae, Samsung and Daewoo being the biggest shipbuilders in the world.
I prefer some types of Japanese green tea to any other. Japanese beer is probably better but I find little difference between soju and sake.
I am closer to the South Korean rather than Japan experience. I love the food of both countries.

I believe that the idea of Japan vs. South Korea is even more hyped up because of their violent history and the Japanese occupation, and all that accompanied that terrible time in both countries history. It seems to me that ROK is behind Japan in most every way, but the sense of rivalry is leaps and bounds stronger in ROK than in Japan. It seems that the most interesting arenas are the sporting arenas. Soccer and baseball. Just look at what happened this last summer at the WBC. ROK was the #1 seed from Asia because they went unbeaten. Japan was #2, only losing to Korea. Then Japan wins the whole fraken thing. What is Koreas reaction? "We want to play Japan again." and "We are the real champions because we beat them in the prelims." It seems that the rivalry between the two countries is way more "personal" for Korea that it is Japan.

The recent efforts to repair the social and cultural abyss is a good start. Bans on Japanese TV shows and music have been lifted and trade in the entertainment field has created superstars of Korean actors and actresses in Japan, and visa versa.

I think it is a good health rivalry that won't soon dissipate.

They are not enemies. They are neighbors.

Pathetic question!

Japan is a developed country, South Korea is a developing country. They are just not comparable, aside from the fact that they are close to each other geographically.

The asker is probably Korean. Koreans like to compare their country to Japan.

Japan leads in front.
Also, Japan has a good lead over other car-producing countries.

Why South Koreans want to compare always? hahaha...
Leave Japan alone.
