Madonna was a very popupar musician in the early seventies and was never a footballer. Maradona was the footballer that played for Argentina and used his hand (of God) to score in the world cup. The simple answer therefore is Madonna never played for Argentina and became recognised on a global basis. I do not doubt the chances of a local Madonna playing locally.

Definitely not... Madonna doesn't have a clue about football, Maradona, on the other hand, does, and he used to play for Argentina indeed.
He was one of the greatest in the history of football, a truly magic player who was always there to bring life to the game with a move that no one would expect. A player who could come up with a cheatful play like the so called Hand of God, and during the same game, come up with a truly sublime play like his second goal against England in Mexico'86 (Barrilete Cósmico/Cosmic Kite like we call it, look it up in youtube).
He was one of those very few capable of actually saying something beatiful with just his legs and a ball.
Then the dark times came, he got into drugs and started saying way too many things he should have never said.
Got to say a lot of people even here in Argentina started hating him for being such a loose mouth. He was on coke all the time and was getting obese. Maradona became a truly unpleasant person.
And so it was for quite a few years, he was getting in and out of rehab all the time, his friends got involved in drug and sex scandals and so on. Some three or four years ago, Maradona got really bad, his body was just a joke of the athlete he used to be and couldn't almost walk. Then his heart started to fail. He was on the verge of dying, and this close encounter seemed to finally make him understand.
He left coke once and for all (oh yes he left it, believe me), underwent surgery to get a gastric belt and started losing weight, straightened up his life and his relationship with family and daughters and started doing things like representative indoor football.
Everybody seems to want to remember him for being a drug-addict, it´s simple, he's one of those who you either love or hate, so there are a lot of people who hate him!.
If you ask me, I think Maradona today is an example of how you can get through even the deepest of hells after falling from the very heights of the Olympus. I don´t hate him, I don't love him, I respect him for his inner strength and thank him for all the happiness and joy that he gave me during his playing days.
