There are many different ways to increase your signal strength. Your brother could add a range extender to his wireless network, or you could try a higher gain antenna of some sort, or both. Possibly a different wireless card in your laptop would give better results. Wireless is still evolving, and new solutions are coming out all the time. Experiment!!

Check out this video...they used an old cell phone and a metal salad bowl to create a wireless "antenna" or "reciever dish". They wrapped the network cable around the cell phone several times and then suspended it in the center of the metal bowl with tape. Something about how the cell phone continually "pings" for it's signal helped to improve the wireless signal reception. Not sure if it's what your looking for but I love the McGyver fixes for things.

Ask your "brother" to move the wireless router closer to the center of the house and to a location that is as high as possible.

Also, unplug and disconnect the battery from any cordless phones that use the 2.4GHz frequency spectrum. These cordless phones can cause interference.

Short range and weak signals plague all wireless routers. There's little if anything that can be done to cure it. You should invest a little more and get a network cable running from his router to your room. It's a world of difference and as secure as it gets.

How old is the router, should buy a new one. Most of the new ones go pretty far.
