I'm building a new garage, and I want to install a black and white checkered tile floor in a portion of it. What type of tile should I use? I know linoleum wouldn't work, it has to be a harder surface than that. I'm not looking for the interlocking rubber/plastic floor tile, I'm looking for tile that you actually glue down permanently. I wondered if asphalt tile is what I should use, but I've also heard that asphalt tile is easily softened by solvents and greases (which it is bound to see).

I've looked at the epoxy coatings like ucoatit, and I'm still considering them. But, overall, I think the tile might be a better option. They're easy to repair / replace individual tiles, and they've got a classic appearance. Does anyone happen to know what type of tile would be best to use?

I would most likely go for a VCT tile, they are the kind 12x12 tile you see in schools, college and maybe shopping malls. My family has owned and operated a tile and carpet business for over 60 years now and i know they have put VCT tile down in similiar situations like yours. IT maybe a little slippery, but just be careful thats all, it will look very nice though. Another plus side to the 12x12 is that if one ever gets damaged they are easily replace just by taking a large chisel and popping them right on out and put some new adhesive down and put the new one right in. One downfall might be it may stain. If you ever spill some oil on it i would clean that up ASAP. An epoxy floor would be the best bet for traction and durability but its ugly. Black and white checker is the ultimate look for a kick *** shop. Hope this helps. Good luck

I disagree with these folks, I think you should consider using through body porcelain tile. It is non-absorbant. The color goes all through in case of chipping. You glue it down with thinset or mastic and then grout. You can get it with texture so it is non-slip. It is freeze proof. Some colors are speckled. I think it would be ideal. I don't know about having WHITE as one of the colors in a garage though.....

I think tile would work fine. Look for some comercial grade asphalt tile. One word of caution, the tile be VERY slippery when its wet

epoxy would be your best bet summit racing has some garage flooring in their catalog you have do decide what your going to be doin in you garage and go from there

What about the ucoat it surface? www.ucoatit.com. It's an epoxy coating, and should last for a long time and solvents, fuels don't bother it.
