Well there is this site teenchat.com that will give you chat rooms. you could always ask ur friends to go to a certain chat room on there. It's free and you dont have to download anything. Good luck!

Gmail also has a chat client, if any of your friends use google talk or jabber (although i'm not sure if you can make the gmail client can talk to accounts on other jabber servers)

yes aim express is good but it wont work if you have a pop up blocker, so make sure to disable that
