A DVD or CD collection is the typical example for a database. It's easy to start but has the potential to scale in complexity by a large factor, which is great when you need to build off of earlier work by adding functionality.

Depending on the database, either MS Access or Excel.
I have my 1,150 DVD movies in Excel.

Books, Movies, or CDs would be good topics. If you're using Micrsoft Access, it even has some sample databases you can use as starters.

mysql is free, powerful and relatively easy to use.

Microsoft access is okay if you just need to do simple tasks with a simple database.
