My advice would be to go with either:-

Co-Operative Bank (cashminder account), Natwest (step account) or Halifax (easycash) as these all offer a debit card with their basic accounts but no overdraft or cheque facilities. You can obtain these even if you have really bad credit - but on a note of caution the Halifax takes about 4 weeks to open as you have to do it all by post!

All other banks offer the same facilities but only issue a cash card which you can use in machines.

I have been a member of First Direct for over 10 years and have never had any issues.

It is a telephone and web based bank that is part of HSBC, and has an exceptionally high customer satisfaction rating.

I would check out the website on money facts as previously suggested by Nicky.
