Could somebody explain to me how percent signs and hyphens work in the context of HTML and address bars?

symbols like < and > are special characters in HTML. If you want to code those symbols in your html you will need to use & l t ; (ampersand L T semi-colon with no spaces) and & g t ; (ampersand G T semi-colon with no spaces in between). There are other special characters in html, and they are always preceded with an ampersand with some code.. For example & is coded as & a m p ; (with no spaces)

I can't really give you an example of that here, since the yahoo answers text box recognizes & L T ; and transforms it into < (even though it doesn't recognize other html..)

In web bars, the hyphens are used to define the web address. They are not special characters, so they are no different than any other character such as a,b,c,d, etc... % is used to describe a special character. For example, %20 represents a space, in ASCII code the number 20 (in hex, 32 in decimal) represents a line space..
