Perhaps the minorities in the US saw the war as a way to improve their standing at home, by proving that they were deserving of the rights that they supposedly were endowed with by the Bill of Rights. Hopeful that someday, some generation might actually be allowed to enjoy the freedoms they had been promised. There were brave asian Americans fighting in the European theater, American Indian code talkers doing invaluable work in the Pacific theater and the Tuskogee Airmen, an all African American fighter squadron was one of the best in Europe. It was a step up from the jobs in the service they had been allowed up to that time.

The Machine politics of the day promoted the idea that the underclass ethnic groups needed to prove themselves and then they would get a grand piece of the American Pie. Also most country boys had never been more than 20 or so miles away from home so when the propaganda insisted the war would be over soon most looked upon it as a grand adventure and a test of their manhood. Generation after generation has fallen for the same lie!

I know this is not a very sophisticated answer and it probably expresses a lot of my opinion about American politics, but: The Americans (that is, the politicians) have always liked to go abroad instead of solving their own problems. Plus they like to regard themselves as the political saviour of the world.
