I like to get into a subject in history and do research on it. Right now I'm on a witchcraft thing and how it was 80% women that were executed. But you can due this with any subject that interests you.
I like to read Tolkein..he had more than the 'Lord of the Rings.'
There are two books 'Eragon & Eldest' with a third due out soon that are very good.
There also are many Sci-Fi/Fantasy books out there that make you think about the technology being used.
Hope this helps. ;>)

read any book by Michael Chabon. Possibly the best writer of his generation. Also, look for Plays Well With Others by Alan Gurganis. I also recommend Emma Who Saved My Life by Wilton Barnhardt. These are all relatively current. Try Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury for something a little older.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. One of my most favorite books.
If you like suspense, but don't mind a little romance, try some Iris Johansen books. She's a great author. Otherwise, I would suggest John Grisham (legal thrillers).

Check out books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They are my favorite authors right now and I just read Lincoln Child's new book Deep Storm. The books they write together are just amazing.
Still Life With Crows
Riptide
Relic
The Reliquary
Mount Dragon
and others
This is a series of 3: Brimstone, Dance of Death, Book of the Dead.
My son is 16 and he has read them and thinks they are great.

I definetly recommend the "Anita Blake" series by Laurell K. Hamilton. I do belive there are 14 books out with one more coming in June. Very upbeat from page one. From the first book on there's so much to learn and try to figure out. You can't classify her books into horror, mystery, romance,..none of em' because these books have everything mixed. Blood, gore, gun and knife fights against vampires, werewolves, wererats, wereleopards..lions..hyenas, and Anita. Not your average human and vampire hunter and zombie raiser. There's so much to her books I could keep going and going on what all they involve. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't stop reading them until they all were read. I went to the library and if they didn't have the one I needed I ordered it. I'm all caught up and now have to TRY to patiently wait for the next one. Very awesome books. Hope you pick one up and start the adventure with one bad-*** female and her freaky life.

One of my all-time favorite books is called The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck. It is not suspenseful, but an excellent read anyway. My favorite suspense authors are Dean Koontz and Patricia Cornwall - though they are not usually very complicated or confusing.

I would try Gone With The Wind, Scarlett, anything by James Clavell (these are really thick), books by Karen Slaughter, books by Greg Iles (not too thin and very suspense full), books by Michael Criction (these are really science based), books by Lisa Jackson. I would give these authors a try and see how you go from there.
HAPPY READING!!
